Châtel

Despite being well known as an international ski resort, Châtel is still very much an alpine village. Old traditions have been maintained and the forty or so farms in the village produce their own delicious cheeses,
the most famous being Abondance and Tomme.
The area is rich in wildlife; a paradise for naturalists and bird watchers. Chamois, alpine ibex, mouflon, marmot, golden eagle and edelweiss can all be seen within a few miles of the village. Not many miles away is the nature reserve where Lammergeier vultures have been reintroduced to the Alps.
The village has a wide variety of small shops, many selling local produce and specialities. There is a small open air market every Wednesday. A large supermarket on the outskirts of the village is very reasonably priced and ideal for those self-catering.
Châtel is well known for its 20 or so restaurants catering for all depths of pocket.
During the peak holiday season there is a free bus service to most parts of the village for the convenience of visitors until 6 pm. However, we would suggest that visitors may prefer to have their own private transport to ensure they get the most out of the area.
